Bovary Madame

Theatre

From 12 to 13 March 2026

Filmmaker and director Christophe Honoré adapts the story of Emma Bovary, the famous heroine in a desperate quest for freedom, for the stage.

Emma Bovary, wife of a modest country doctor, suffocates in the narrowness and monotony of her married life. She soon abandons herself to her lovers, to senseless spending, and to exalted daydreams. She has been described as an irresponsible or inconsistent woman. Is she really? What does our interpretation of this woman's story say about us?

On the stage, Christophe Honoré brings together the circus and cinema to give voice to the "provincial customs" described by Flaubert. Reenacting them in pantomime style, the men around Emma relive the most illustrious episodes of her life, before she speaks again, asserting her subjectivity and freedom. Ludivine Sagnier is entrusted with the role of this mysterious woman, whose aspiration to forge her own destiny remains a poignant scandal.
