It all starts with Charlotte's portrait. That of a beautiful young girl with a deep gaze... Slowly, it comes to life. The tone is set.
We witness a life. That of a little girl, then a teenager, a young woman, and an exceptional artist.
We become attached to her. We smile at her hesitations, her first loves.
We discover her torments, her desires, her fears. We are moved to see Charlotte's courage in navigating family upheavals and the life force that drives her.
But Charlotte Salomon was born in 1917 in Berlin into a Jewish family... She was 16 when Hitler came to power...
So, this story could have been the beautiful, simple tale of an artist who would assert herself and take her place in the world.
But then, a character appears and becomes increasingly overwhelming and destructive: the shadow of Nazism invades the canvas...
Great History comes to shake up the little girl. As the threat becomes ever more present, Charlotte must flee Germany. Taking refuge in Villefranche, Charlotte will endeavor to deliver a rich autobiographical work, mixing painting, music and poetry... like a final tribute to art and life...
