De loin en loin
Opera
23 October 2025
This evening brings together two choreographers from different generations, driven by unique backgrounds.
Brazilian Juliano Nunes trained at the Rio de Janeiro Conservatory and then in Mannheim, Germany. After dancing with the Royal Ballet of Flanders, the Leipzig Ballet, and the Norwegian National Ballet, he devoted himself to choreography. His writing draws on classical vocabulary while exploring the body's instinctive responses: fluid spirals, fine articulation, and attentive musicality. Invited by Nederlands Dans Theater 2, the Royal Ballet of London, and the Mariinsky Theatre, this is his first creation for a French company.
Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui created Loin in 2005 for the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève. In this work, he questions the distance between humans, eras, and cultures through the friction of languages. He juxtaposes a Baroque sonata with a Moorish-inspired set and costumes reminiscent of Japanese martial arts. The dancers speak, isolate gestures, transmit them: identities blur, bodies merge, distance becomes an encounter.
