The young French trumpet prodigy Lucienne Renaudin Vary will introduce you to a whole tradition that stretches from the height of Russian romanticism to Soviet music.
A small masterpiece of melodic beauty, the Serenade for Strings is still too rarely performed. Composed in 1880, this piece shows Tchaikovsky at the height of his art, lyrical and catchy. These are two adjectives that could also be applied to the Trumpet Concerto by Armenian composer Alexander Aroutiounian. Composed in 1950, this devilishly virtuosic work for the soloist draws its inspiration and energy from popular Armenian, Russian and Gypsy folklore. Five years earlier (1945), Prokofiev had created his most ambitious symphony: a vast and grandiose vessel to the glory of the people who had just triumphed over the Nazi enemy, this Symphony No. 5 is a hymn of victory and freedom addressed to all oppressed peoples.
