Exposition – Tom Wesselmann. After Matisse
Exhibition
From 24 February to 29 May 2023
The work of Henri Matisse was an essential source of inspiration for the American artist Tom Wesselmann (1931-2004).
Through a selection of twenty-five works, the exhibition "Tom Wesselmann. After Matisse" traces this admiration, which is expressed in many ways, from his first collages in 1959 to his ultimate works, the Sunset Nudes of the 2000s.
With the Great American Nudes series of 1961-1962, Wesselmann transformed the Matissian odalisque into a pop icon. Subsequently, Matisse's work remained an essential reference for him in his search for visual efficiency and image saturation, an artist he deeply admired. In its presentation, the exhibition focuses on showing Wesselmann in the studio, understanding his elaborate technique of collage or volume drawing, which always gives great importance to the question of scale, from the smallest formats to vast realizations.
The exhibition is supported by the Galerie Almine Rech and the Estate Tom Wesselmann.
