Argan, a widower and hypochondriac, is remarried to Béline, who feigns attentive care but only hopes for her husband's death to inherit. He endures bloodletting, purges, and numerous other remedies prescribed by doctors eager to indulge his lucubrations... and especially to collect their pensions!

Argan's daughter, Angélique, loves Cléante, much to the chagrin of her father. The latter prefers to marry her to Thomas Diafoirus, the son of a good family and, above all, a doctor... But will he please the young woman?
