Le Professeur – Festival de Tragédies

Theatre

30 June 2025

Muriel Mayette-Holtz reunites with Carole Bouquet for a one-woman show about a contemporary tragedy, that of Samuel Paty, a history and geography teacher who was murdered in October 2020 as he left the college where he worked.

The Professor retraces the ten days leading up to the tragedy. In this retrospective, each person reveals what they didn't do, what they could or should have done. No one is a murderer, and yet, it was the sum total of cowardice that led to the inevitable. The author, Émilie Frèche, conveys this implacable mechanism with striking acuity.

I chose a performance-reading with a single character because it was necessary for this fragmented speech to take shape in a single voice, so that we could perceive how each person, in their own guilty way, is a reflection of the other. Everyone was right, everyone was wrong. Who better than Carole Bouquet, with her immense talent, to glide from one register to another, to give a voice to this polyphony of silences and evasions? With the distance of the performance, she will allow us to grasp the extent to which each protagonist, in their irreducible sincerity, failed to take responsibility. Today, it's urgent to stage what upsets us, what moves us, what, unfortunately, is rooted in our current events. Theater allows this distance, this space where we can see, hear, understand, and feel. To represent it is already to confront it. Bringing together two exceptional women, a writer and an actress, is undoubtedly the most beautiful declaration of love I can make to theater.
