Satyagraha

Opera

03 October 2025

Inspired by the life of Mahatma Gandhi, Satyagraha is one of the defining moments of late 20th-century opera. Philip Glass, known for his minimalist style, deploys a completely new orchestral language.

The second installment in Philip Glass's trilogy dedicated to several major historical figures, Satyagraha was born during a period marked by apartheid and racial discrimination. The American composer focuses here on the concept of nonviolent resistance to injustice, satyagraha, which Gandhi developed during his long stay in South Africa. From Tolstoy to Martin Luther King, a whole constellation of thinkers who influenced Gandhi or were inspired by his example take the stage, for a true ode to nonviolence. For this new production, Léo Warynski and Lucinda Childs, a longtime friend of Philip Glass, return after their memorable Akhnaten. A milestone in the history of opera finally graces the Nice stage.
