In Dunkirk, in June 1940, his comrades and he having missed the embarkation for England at the height of the Debacle, Sergeant Julien Maillat, disgusted and weary, meets Jeanne, a young woman who refuses to leave her ruined house. Julien persuades Jeanne to flee with him and says goodbye to his friends. An improbable romance soon develops between them.
In this spectacular war film, which won over millions of spectators when it was released in 1964, Henri Verneuil presents us with a social study of France in the 1940s. Leading actor in this adaptation of Robert Merle's autobiographical novel (winner of the 1949 Prix Goncourt), Jean-Paul Belmondo, then a symbol of the New Wave, plays a young soldier in the midst of an existentialist drift, a portrait of a damaged youth who has lost their bearings, lost in the middle of a war that does not belong to them.
