Nice 2028, European Capital of Culture Bid

October 7, 2022

New 2028 objective for the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolitan area!

European Capital of Culture

The scheme was launched in 1985 by the Greek Minister of Culture Melina Mercouri and Jack Lang, the French Minister of Culture. It highlights the richness and diversity of cultures emanating from the European Union.

A city is designated by the European Union for a period of one calendar year during which a programme of cultural events is organised.

“The artistic and cultural programme of NICE2028 will reflect the identity and ambition to make this territory a cultural society which, based on its heritage and values, is focussed on youth, innovation, digital technology and the future, on a European scale, in order to take up the major challenges of the contemporary world and particularly that of adapting to climate change.”

Christian Estrosi, Mayor of Nice, President of the Metropolitan area, Delegate President of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Region

The stages of the application

  • 1 December 2022: Submission of the pre-selection file to the European Commission;
  • 1st semester 2023: Pre-selection phase, announcement of the 4 pre-selected cities;
  • 2nd semester 2023: Selection phase;
  • December 2023: Announcement of the winning city by the European Commission.

Connecting the unexpected

“The common thread of the NICE2028 bid is the promise to connect the unexpected.

By building a bid around a contrasting DNA, between sea and mountains, the Mediterranean and the Alps, coastal towns and inland villages, by linking French and Italian cultural entities, NICE2028 invites its inhabitants and Europeans to embody a promise – that of connecting the unexpected.

Connecting the unexpected means abolishing the borders of the real and the imaginary, the physical and the digital, the geographical borders and the artistic disciplines. It means disrupting codes and freeing oneself from prejudices while awakening one’s curiosity. It means bringing together opposing cultural practices to be surprised by the magic of this unlikely connection. It is proposing that the sea return to the source of the mountains, crossing the impossible topographical limits thanks to a reasoned mobility. It means preserving rare species in the heart of cities, heritage works in the heart of valleys. It means letting go to welcome the unknown. It is, quite simply, to make culture the cement of a more enlightened and fulfilled society, more frugal and responsible, which unites this “community of the living”.
