Chapel of Saint Roch Saint Etienne of Tinée Chapel of Saint Roch Saint Etienne of Tinée

Saint Roch Chapel

The Saint-Roch Chapel is located on the former and only access point to the village of Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée. It is a chapel that welcomed travelers.

In terms of popular worship, he is primarily the patron saint of all pilgrims as well as of many brotherhoods and guilds: notably surgeons, dermatologists, and apothecaries (pharmacists).
Saint Roch (born in Montpellier around 1350 and died 1378), Rochus in Latin and Sant Ròc in Occitan, was a French pilgrim and wonderworker, honored on August 16, to whom the Church granted the canonical title of confessor (for having suffered greatly in the service of the faith but without suffering martyrdom). His cult, first born in France and Italy, became very popular and spread throughout the world.
This chapel has a wide porch supported by two stone columns. Inside, the chapel preserves a painting above the altar, pairing Saint Sebastian and Saint Roch. This painting is signed Guiseppe Puons and is dated 1684.
Every year, custom dictates that a mass be celebrated there on August 16th in honor of the Municipal Council.
