The Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona and the Musée Matisse in Nice have joined forces to organise an exhibition devoted to the relationship between the works of Henri Matisse and Joan Miró.
Starting with a biographical overview, the exhibition looks back at the decisive moments when the two artists' shared views of each other's work were particularly productive: Miró's exploration of Fauvism in the late 1910s and early 1940s; and the stimulus provided to Matisse by Miró's work from the mid-1930s onwards.
The exhibition presents their shared practices, contrasting Miró's assassination of painting with Matisse's decorative aesthetic: illustrated books, large monumental compositions, and a final 'face-off' between major works of testamentary value by each of the two artists.
