Connecting Place Masséna to the Promenade des Anglais, the Albert I Garden is a huge three-hectare park in the heart of Nice, which hosts many cultural events throughout the year.
Arbours of greenery surround the vast stretches of lawn with ponds and fountains. Across from the sea, it extends to Place Masséna. This is a vast area for strolling and relaxing with a bandstand and a late-19th-century theatre in the green (Théâtre de Verdure). It hosts many events in summer. ‘L’Arc de Venet - 115°5’ , a huge black metal arc 19 metres high, has been there since 1988, a gift of the contemporary artist, Bernar Venet.Affaires: Jardin Albert-Ier is one of the oldest public gardens in Nice and the first to have connected the old town with the new. This garden was built between 1861 and 1890, designed by the engineer Durandy from Nice. Successively known as Jardin des Plantes, Jardin Paradis, then simply Jardin Public, it was named for King Albert I of Belgium in 1914.
This French-style garden is made up of a vast lawn with many, often rare, plants. It also features a theatre in the green (Théâtre de Verdure), a bandstand built in 1868, the ‘Tritons’ fountain’ and, more recently, a monumental 19m-high metal sculpture by Bernar Venet, L’Arc 115°5. Near the pedestrian streets with their many fine shops, Jardin Albert-Ier is a natural haven in the city centre!
