La Porte d’Orient

It was Monseigneur Moreau (1759-1763) who had a breach made in the ramparts, so that the major seminary could be reached more quickly.

In 1787, the Commune was forced to convert the breach into a doorway, to allow Monseigneur Pisani de La Gaude (Bishop of Vence) to reach the door of his Episcopal Palace without getting out of his coach!
Outside and to the left of the door, under the sill of a window, a stone larger than the others bears the date 1592 and marks the spot where Lesdiguières' cannons breached the town walls during the Siege of Vence.

A few hundred metres away, on Avenue Alphonse Toreille, is the former Seminary built by Monseigneur Godeau in 1669.
