Le bourgeois gentilhomme – Festival International de Commedia dell’Arte

Theatre

27 June 2025

Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme is a comedy-ballet in prose and in five acts by Molière, performed at Chambord on October 14, 1670, and in Paris on the following November 29.

Monsieur Jourdain, a wealthy bourgeois, dressed in sumptuous attire, throws himself headlong into learning the codes of nobility. Being a gentleman is the height of bliss for him, and he is determined to do everything in his power to appear one. Thus, the masters of fencing, music, singing, and philosophy... All are busy around him, trying to elevate him to this rank.

In his production of Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, Guy Simon aims to counter the current depressing atmosphere and poisonous climate by unveiling a true ode to the joy of living. Magic and fantasy are captured through the blend of theater, dance, acrobatics, masked performances, and fifteen offbeat characters in extravagant and colorful costumes. The eco-friendly costumes were made, for the most part, from recycled materials by the Métisse workshop.

A radiant Monsieur Jourdain on stage! Created during a residency at the Armand Theatre, Molière's famous comedy-ballet, Kronope's version, is a truly complete theatrical spectacle. The audience, including children, teenagers, and adults, was unanimously captivated by the characterization of the characters and the exceptional performances of the five actors.
