Le Rouge et le Noir

Theatre

From 29 to 31 January 2025

An adaptation condensed into a crazy quest for social ascension by a romantic and proud hero of Stendhal's novel. Catherine Marnas revives here her brilliance and her timeless strength.

On stage, five actors make Stendhal's phrase heard as well as contemporary contradictions.
It is with the fall that the play opens: the trial of Julien Sorel, central character of The Red and the Black, tried for having tried to kill his former lover. Immediately, at the bar, the portrait emerges of a man consumed by hatred of class injustice, he, born from nothing, managed to rise into high society through his knowledge and his passion for women.

"With The Red and the Black, we have here a monument-work that can speak to each and everyone. Open wide the doors of another era, as we hold up a mirror at a distance. Recognize our part in what agitates the behavior of characters from another century. A great romantic driven by societal idealism and, at the same time, a realist embedded squarely in the reality of an era, leaving him no other choice than subversion calculated to achieve his goal. for his purposes (the Church and women as weapons), Julien Sorel brings together in himself all the contradictions of contemporary complexity. This is how he speaks to me… and to us."
