Le Tartuffe

Theatre

From 07 to 09 May 2026

Tartuffe or The Imposter is one of Molière's greatest scandals but also one of his greatest successes.

Jean Liermier, director of the Théâtre de Carouge, takes on this iconic fable in a refined setting, notably inviting Muriel Mayette-Holtz to the stage.

Tartuffe has been taken in by Orgon, a bourgeois father. In the eyes of his wife Elmire and the entire household, the newcomer is a devious impostor who cannot be trusted. For Orgon, Tartuffe is the most fervent of devotees, the best of men. From the bosom of his protector, Tartuffe then begins a meteoric rise. The poison seeps in, the venom takes effect, and the family implodes…

In his play, written in 1664, Molière, strikingly echoing our times, seems to warn us: fear, fascination, and the law of the strongest have constantly engendered suffering. Nearly four centuries later, are we not all still Tartuffes, lying to survive in society? Are we not all Orgons, submitting out of weakness?
