The scene is a public garden where everyone is walking their dog... Ergaste, a rich young man, suddenly falls in love with Clarice. It turns out that she has a sister who dresses like her and looks exactly like her, which leads to a number of misunderstandings. Ergaste thinks he is talking to Clarice when he is talking to his sister Hortense, and Hortense is seduced by Ergaste even though propriety does not allow her to speak to him in private. Clarice is jealous of her sister and Lisette, her young companion, gets involved because she has a crush on Ergaste's valet! Harlequin's common sense helps to clear up the situation, especially when the two sisters appear together! Hortense will be supplanted without consolation by her sister. All's well that ends well?
