Chapel of the White Penitents

The chapel has a small square bell tower topped with a silver bulb and the facade is decorated with a sculpture of the Descent from the Cross. The interior dates from the 17th century and includes a lage retable along with a wooden sculpted high altar.

Beneath the high altar, a gilded white-lacquered wooden sepulchre contains a statue of Christ on a human scale. The chapel is dedicated to the Holy Cross. The chapel has a small square bell tower topped by a silver bulb and a facade decorated with a Descent from the Cross. The interior decoration dates from the 17th century and features a large altarpiece and a carved wooden high altar. Its titular saints, Blaise and Eloi, recall its character. Its monumental polychrome wooden altar is characteristic of Alpine Baroque.
Recently restored and illuminated, the church's copper-bulb bell tower in the “Genoese” style is a rallying point for visitors. As early as the 17th century, the white penitents of Saint-Martin were in charge of the village hospital. However, there is no social division between the members of the two brotherhoods. The families of the local notability shared their leadership, making the brotherhood a veritable social structure parallel to that of the Commune.
