Villa Santo Sospir

Listed as a Monument Historique (national heritage site) since 2007
The tattooed villa of Santo Sospir

Jean Cocteau, a multi-talented artist, was a faithful guest of the Côte d'Azur, and many towns still bear the imprint of his visit.
In 1950, when the poet had just finished shooting his film "Les Enfants Terribles", his friend Francine Weisweiller invited him to spend a few days at her villa in Cap-Ferrat.
Seduced by the beauty and magic of the site, Jean Cocteau stayed at the villa for several months, becoming a regular guest. It was during this first stay that he began, as he put it, "tattooing" the villa's bare white walls.
He would say, "A young woman lives in Santo Sospir. I didn't need to dress the walls, I needed to draw on their skin: I treated the frescoes linearly with the few colors that enhance the tattoos. Santo Sospir is a tattooed villa".
